BRIEF HISTORY OF THE EPHRAIM PUBLIC LIBRARY
Our library started years ago with the gift of a few books in the early 1930's. Some were placed in the corner of the village barber shop; others were stored in the attic of the village hall. Eventually, as materials accumulated, additional space was provided in the attic and subsequently in the basement of the village hall.
In 1950, the library became part of the Door-Kewaunee Regional Library project and the materials were classified and cataloged. When that project ended in December 1952, the Ephraim Library became a branch of the Door County Library. That affiliation continues today.
Eventually, the limited basement quarters proved inadequate. In 1961, an addition was built to the village hall for a cost of $14,300. Verra Sauer, Librarian (1950-1963) and Dr. David Stevens, head of the library committee, spearheaded this project. Permanent and summer residents of Ephraim subscribed all of this cost. The new structure was shared by the information center and the library.
Initially, the library was open 10 hours per week. That increased to 14 hours per week when Jane Shea (1963-1979) was librarian. Sally Jacobson (1979-1995) was librarian when the information center moved out in the mid-1980's and the library increased to its present size.
In 1997 the library was renovated with new floor covering, bookshelves, computer workstations and librarian's workspace. Our present librarian, Linda Malmgren (1995- ) is on duty 14 hours per week in the winter and 22 hours per week in the summer. Visitors and residents alike use the library materials and computers free of charge.
